Yesterday, Researchers in South Korea reported that pumpkin skins contain a powerful antifungal protein that works against the cause of many common yeast infections. The Pr-2 protein inhibited the growth of 10 species of harmful fungus, including Candida albicans, which is a common cause of vaginal yeast infections, yeast-related diaper rash, and other health problems.

They report that this discovery could be used in food safety, agriculture, and medicine. Koreans have long used pumpkin in medicinal concoctions, claiming it’s healing effects. I remember going to a korean friend’s house back in middle school and you could always tell when her mom had a headache. She kept this stinky pot of herbs and leaves brewing for days. Whew, staaank!
